Tour Montparnasse: the Mars leyline and the monolith of Saturn

by 5ocietyx

Tour Montparnasse is a skyscraper in Paris located at 33 Avenue du Maine.  Ever since it was built, film-buffs have noticed its resemblance to the monolith in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Although not of the exact same dimensions as the monolith it is interesting to note that construction commenced one year after the film and the novel of the same name written by Arthur C Clarke, who wrote the book concurrently, was released.

Montparnasse

It is slightly offset from the Champ du Mars leyline and dominates the skyline.

Breathing

Breathing, Broadcasting House

Breathing, Broadcasting House

Inspired by the building’s Audio and Music Division and shaped like a listening glass (or loud hailer), ‘Breathing’ is a 10 metre (33ft) sculpture dedicated to BBC war correspondents and reporters killed in the world’s trouble spots. Notice the dome and the spires of All Soul’s church and the replica shortwave radio mast on the original building in the background.

A poem written by its creator, Jaume Plensa, spirals around it and reads:

life turns and turns on the crystal glass
breathing in our body

silence is a voice, our voice
silence is a body, our body

life turns and turns on the crystal glass
breathing in our body

I invite you to breathe
I invite you to listen to the silence

A lost child’s painting

by 5ocietyx

‘there’s this painting Sarah left behind, displayed in her classroom, which was reproduced in the London Sun four days after her disappearance: a man standing upon a 13-square checkered floor, between columns bearing Sarah’s name. He wears what appears to be an apron of 33 studs, and holds an object in his left hand. His right sleeve is missing.’

Menwith Hill eavesdropping base undergoes massive expansion

by 5ocietyx

Menwith Hill

America’s largest eavesdropping centre in Britain, Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire, is being expanded in a multimillion-pound programme as it becomes increasingly vital to US intelligence and military operations, according to a study of the controversial base released on Thursday.

The base, which plays a key role in the global network of the National Security Agency (NSA), GCHQ’s American partner, now includes 33 radomes – commonly called “golf balls” after the white sheeting protecting the satellite receiving and transmission stations – and is undergoing a big construction programme.

The study describes the programme, called Project Phoenix, as “one of the largest and most sophisticated high technology programmes carried out anywhere in the UK over the last 10 years”. Work on it has been reserved for US-based arms corporations including Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, and their personnel with high-level security clearance, it notes.

Though the base is officially called RAF Menwith Hill, most of the staff there are US employees of the NSA. The total number of people working there is due to increase from 1,800 last year (of whom 400 were British) to 2,500 in 2015.
